PEARL COCKATIEL: What Makes the Pearl Cockatiel Different from Other Varieties
The first thing people usually notice about a Pearl Cockatiel is its unusual feather pattern. While a Normal Grey Cockatiel has a relatively uniform grey body, the Pearl displays lighter markings across its back, shoulders and wings. These markings form an attractive arrangement that resembles small scales or rows of pearls.
This mutation can appear in different background colours. A Normal Grey Pearl may have grey feathers with yellowish or whitish spots, while a Cinnamon Pearl displays a warmer brown background. Pearl markings can also appear alongside Pied or Whiteface characteristics, creating birds with several visible color features.
One interesting detail is that the appearance of Pearl Cockatiels can change as they mature. Young males usually display obvious pearling, but many gradually lose the pattern following their first adult moult. Females generally maintain their distinctive markings, which is why mature Pearl females are particularly recognisable.
The mutation is sex-linked recessive, meaning that the sex and genetic background of the parents influence the appearance of their offspring.
In terms of size and body structure, Pearl Cockatiels are no different from other cockatiel mutations. They normally reach approximately 30–33 centimetres in length and weigh around 80–100 grams.
