FALLOW COCKATIEL: Origin, History and Distinctive Appearance
The Fallow Cockatiel is a less commonly encountered color mutation that attracts attention because of its unusual brownish plumage and reddish eyes. Unlike the darker grey appearance of the original cockatiel, this variety displays softer shades of cinnamon, beige and yellow, giving it a distinctive appearance among captive-bred birds.
The Fallow mutation developed within cockatiel breeding populations rather than originating from a separate wild population. Its species ancestry traces back to Australia, but breeders established the color variation through generations of selective breeding.
Fallow Cockatiels have reduced dark pigmentation, resulting in a softer overall appearance. Depending on the particular genetic form, their feathers may range from light brown to warmer bronze shades. Some individuals also display yellow coloring across the chest and face.
There are different fallow-related forms discussed in cockatiel genetics, including Bronze Fallow and Recessive Silver, historically sometimes called Silver Fallow. These should not automatically be treated as identical mutations.
Their personalities are similar to those of other cockatiels. They are social, curious and active birds that enjoy climbing, whistling and interacting with familiar people.
