CINNAMON COCKATIEL: What Makes the Cinnamon Cockatiel Different from a Normal Grey
Although the Cinnamon Cockatiel shares the same body structure as the Normal Grey, the difference in feather pigmentation is immediately noticeable. Its body has a warm brown appearance rather than the darker charcoal-grey coloring associated with wild-type cockatiels.
This difference comes from a genetic mutation that changes the production of melanin. Instead of developing the usual dark grey and black pigments, Cinnamon Cockatiels produce brown shades throughout their feathers. Depending on the bird’s genetic background, the coloring may appear pale beige, warm taupe or rich chocolate brown.
The head is another interesting feature. Mature males generally develop a yellow face with orange cheek patches, while females tend to retain a softer facial appearance. Young birds can be more difficult to distinguish because their adult coloring develops with maturity.
Cinnamon Cockatiels can also be combined with other mutations. Cinnamon Pearl birds, for example, display attractive pearled patterns against a brown background. Cinnamon Pied individuals combine the warm brown color with irregular pale patches.
Their size is similar to other cockatiels, with adults measuring approximately 30–33 centimetres and weighing around 80–100 grams.
