Indian Ringneck Parakeet
The Indian Ringneck Parakeet is one of the most recognisable and widely kept parrot varieties in the world. Originally native to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka, this beautiful bird has a long history of living alongside people. It was admired in ancient Indian societies for its intelligence, attractive appearance and remarkable ability to imitate human speech. Over time, it became a popular companion bird in many countries.
What makes this parakeet particularly attractive is its bright green plumage, long pointed tail and distinctive neck markings. Mature males develop a striking black and rose-colored ring around the neck, while females generally have a greenish or much less noticeable neck marking. Its curved red beak and expressive eyes give it an unmistakable appearance.
From a breeder’s perspective, Indian Ringnecks are intelligent, energetic and curious birds. They enjoy exploring their surroundings, investigating toys and learning new sounds. Although some individuals become affectionate with regular handling, they are not always naturally cuddly. Young birds benefit from patient socialisation and consistent interaction.
They are also excellent talkers, with some individuals developing surprisingly clear vocabularies. However, talking ability varies from one bird to another.
