Red Tailed Cockatoo: The Striking Black Parrot of Australia
The Red-tailed Cockatoo, commonly called the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, is a magnificent Australian parrot recognized for its dark plumage and vivid red tail feathers. It is considerably different in appearance from the white cockatoos, giving it a unique place among the larger members of the family.
Its scientific name is Calyptorhynchus banksii, and it is distributed across several regions of mainland Australia. The species occupies different environments, including eucalyptus woodland, open forests and areas where suitable food-producing trees are available.
Adult birds can reach approximately 60 cm in length and commonly weigh around 650–900 g. Males have predominantly black feathers with striking red panels across the tail. Females are generally brownish-black, with yellow markings across their head and body and orange-yellow barring on their tails.
One interesting feature is the presence of five recognized subspecies. Their appearance, distribution and conservation circumstances can differ, so identifying the particular population is important when discussing the species.
In the wild, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos feed mainly on seeds from trees and other native plants. Their strong bills are particularly useful for opening hard seed coverings.
These birds also have specialized nesting requirements. They depend on large natural tree hollows, which can take many years to develop. Protecting mature trees is therefore essential for their long-term survival.
The Red-tailed Cockatoo is an impressive species, but it requires substantial space and specialist care in captivity. Its natural history is just as fascinating as its appearance.
