Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo: The Beautiful Pink Parrot of Australia
Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo is widely admired for its extraordinary appearance, particularly its beautiful combination of soft pink feathers and a spectacular multicolored crest. Also called the Pink Cockatoo, this Australian species is one of the most distinctive members of the cockatoo family.
Its natural range covers inland regions of Australia, where it inhabits dry woodland, semi-arid landscapes and areas with suitable nesting trees. The species was named after the Australian explorer Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, while its scientific name is Lophochroa leadbeateri.
An adult generally measures around 35–40 cm and weighs approximately 340–480 g. Its body is predominantly pale pink and white, while the crest displays striking red and yellow bands when raised. Unlike the single-colored crest of many cockatoos, this multicolored display gives Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo a particularly elegant appearance.
In the wild, these birds are often encountered in pairs or small groups. They search for seeds, roots, bulbs and other natural foods, sometimes traveling considerable distances when resources become scarce.
Their personality can be more reserved than that of some other cockatoos. They require patient socialization, suitable enrichment and a stable environment. Their long lifespan also makes ownership a serious commitment.
Although the species is globally assessed as Least Concern by some references, particular Australian populations face significant conservation pressures. Protecting mature nesting trees and natural feeding areas remains important.
