Umbrella Cockatoo: Origin, History and Physical Description
The Umbrella Cockatoo is one of the most recognizable white parrots in the world. Its beautiful white plumage, expressive dark eyes and impressive fan-shaped crest have made it a favorite among cockatoo enthusiasts. Also known as the White Cockatoo, this species has a scientific name of Cacatua alba.
Its natural home is the northern Moluccan Islands of Indonesia, where it inhabits tropical forests, mangroves, wooded areas and agricultural landscapes. Unlike Australian cockatoos, the Umbrella Cockatoo comes from a relatively restricted island range, making the protection of its natural habitat particularly important.
An adult usually measures approximately 45–46 cm and weighs around 400–600 g. Its body is covered in white feathers, with a subtle yellow coloring beneath the wings and tail. Its most recognizable feature is its large crest, which opens into a rounded fan resembling an umbrella.
In the wild, Umbrella Cockatoos feed on fruits, seeds, nuts and other natural foods. They are social birds that may travel in pairs, small groups or larger flocks while searching for food.
Their personalities are equally distinctive. They are intelligent, curious and capable of developing strong relationships with familiar individuals. However, their emotional and social needs are considerable.
Anyone interested in keeping an Umbrella Cockatoo should understand that its beauty comes with responsibility. Proper housing, enrichment, nutrition and veterinary attention are essential for maintaining its health.
