Green Winged Macaw: What Owners Should Know

The Green Winged Macaw is often appreciated for its impressive appearance, but experienced keepers know that its personality deserves just as much attention. These birds are intelligent, emotionally responsive, and capable of developing close relationships with people they trust.

A well-socialised Green-Winged Macaw may enjoy being handled, participating in training sessions, and spending time outside its enclosure. Some individuals are particularly playful, while others prefer observing their surroundings before joining an activity.

Their intelligence also means they need regular challenges. Without sufficient stimulation, a bird may become frustrated or develop undesirable habits. Providing safe wooden toys, puzzle feeders, climbing structures, and supervised activities helps keep its mind occupied.

Because of their enormous beaks, handling must always be respectful. Even a friendly macaw can bite when frightened, uncomfortable, or overstimulated. Learning its body language is therefore essential.

These parrots can also be very vocal. Their loud calls are natural communication behaviours rather than something that can simply be eliminated through training.
