Mealy Amazon Parrot
The Mealy Amazon is one of the largest Amazon parrots and a fascinating representative of the tropical forests of Central and South America. Scientifically identified as Amazona farinosa, it occurs across a broad geographical range that includes parts of Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and neighbouring countries.
Its natural environment consists mainly of humid tropical forests, where mature trees provide food, shelter and suitable nesting cavities. Unlike parrots that frequently spend time in open agricultural landscapes, Mealy Amazons are strongly associated with forest environments.
They are generally observed in pairs or groups and may gather in larger numbers at communal feeding or roosting locations. Their natural diet includes fruits, seeds, nuts and other plant materials.
The species gets its common name from the slightly dusty or powdery appearance of its green plumage. This subtle feature, together with its impressive body size, makes it particularly interesting to parrot enthusiasts.
Its natural history demonstrates how important large, healthy tropical forests are for supporting Amazon parrot populations.
