Red-Lored Amazon Parrot
The Red-Lored Amazon is a colorful parrot native to tropical regions of Central America and parts of northwestern South America. Its scientific name is Amazona autumnalis, and it can be found across a geographical range that includes Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and parts of Colombia and Ecuador.
Its preferred environments include tropical forests, woodland areas, forest edges and landscapes containing mature trees. It is particularly interesting because different populations can display noticeable variations in their facial markings.
The bird receives its common name from the red feathers across its forehead, although the amount of red can vary. Blue and yellow facial markings provide additional color against its green plumage.
Red-Lored Amazons generally travel in pairs or small groups, feeding on fruits, seeds, nuts and other vegetation. They also use tree cavities for nesting.
For bird enthusiasts, this species is a good example of the colorful diversity found among Central American Amazon parrots.
