Blue and Gold Macaw: Training and Intelligence of the Blue and Gold Macaw
There is a reason Blue and Gold Macaws are admired by experienced parrot keepers: they are exceptionally curious and capable of learning through observation and repetition. Spend enough time with one, and you will notice how quickly it begins recognising familiar routines, voices, and activities.
Training does not need to involve complicated tricks. Simple exercises such as stepping onto a hand-held perch, returning to a designated stand, and accepting a target stick can make everyday handling much easier.
Positive reinforcement is particularly valuable. Rewarding desirable behaviour with a small treat, praise, or a favourite activity helps create a positive learning experience. Punishment and intimidation should never be used.
Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Provide puzzle feeders, destructible wooden toys, safe climbing equipment, and opportunities to investigate different textures.
Some Blue and Gold Macaws develop impressive vocabularies, while others communicate mostly through whistles, calls, and body language. Both are perfectly normal. Talking ability should never be treated as a measure of intelligence.
